You may notice as you drive thru Yucca Valley the multitude of sculptures along the long stretch of highway and off roads. I remember the very first time I drove thru Joshua Tree I was in awe at the powerful symbolic sculpture and artistic feeling of that profound area. I didn't know it was one person. That sculptor is Simi Dabah, who has been making art for over forty years, He has donated many of his sculptures to institutions and the city of Joshua Tree.
Through his foundation the Simi Dabah Scultpure Foundation, Simi has facilitated the arts of Joshua Tree and the surrounding area. He embodies the spirit of sculptural arts and culture in the region and is a pioneer along side Noah Purifoy, of whom he shares many similarities. His studio and outdoor sculpture garden can be visited by appointment or simply viewed from the street. He has created over six hundred pieces ranging from small to large works each with their own personality.
His style is rustic symbolism echoing the desert and the sun. Repurposing old steel and welding together majestic forms that speak volumes, Simi is a master at his craft. These works could easily be found in Museums. Just like recently Purifoy is finally being recognized for his Junk Dada scultpures, Simi is gaining a reputation beyond California.
