1 - 7 - 2018Guatemala from 33,000 km: Contemporary Art, 1960 – Present
TEXT: JIM KAPSALIS and OMAR TAN
Guatemala is the main focus in this informative exhibit at MCASB. Guatemala's changing political climate has always effected the people and artists have drawn from these changes. The work was quite impressive and reflected the people and landscape of Guatemala.
The focus is from the 1960 to the present so the exhibit covers a broad range of art styles and artists. There are your traditional painters and then there are the current trend in art..the contemporary vision of the future. Sculptures and Dada-like structures flood the room. From gender perspectives to metaphysics the exhibit covers all the important aspects that surround the artists of Guatemala.
MCASB is a unique museum because it resides inside the Santa Barbara Mall. A bit shocking at first, but then it starts to grow on you. Instead of just shopping for clothes at the Gap or your favorite store you can always head into MCASB, an all free museum and get some culture.
