BURNING MANARTIST ALPHONSO ACOSTA GOES THE DISTANCE
TEXT: JIM KAPSALIS
PAINTING: ALPHONSO ACOSTA
The real burning man is Alphonso Acosta, an artist that lives and works in Shasta County California with his wife and baby. Acosta sometimes burns and destroys his paintings on purpose. A perfectionist who does not give up until he his happy with every curve, drip, layer and burned portion of canvas or wood.
Acosta is a contemporary arts hero that goes the distance for his art form. Sometimes he will burn the pieces for effect and other times he all together just destroys the work. Somewhere in between these two processes between destruction and finality comes a point of severe beauty in which Acosta knows that the piece is complete and ready to be hung.
Great for us fans of his work that we get to see the completed version hanging in a gallery before he destroys it again. At one point he destroyed everything. Now we have the pleasure of buying his work. Even though he scrapes and burns his way to perfection Acosta sometimes just paints and those particular compositions have a sense of child-like escapist fragility to them. I would say a little Art Brut peculiarities with his own twinge of originality.
Whatever the idea it is for Acosta to decide we are sure to love what he does because not to many artists burn over half of their work unless you are Baldessari of course. Acosta is one artist to take notice of in 2016 and beyond because I rarely ever see this sort of dedication and conviction in contemporary art usually just the average drip or two.
